Structures on the Edge

Following the success of the Bathing Beauties arts led regeneration scheme, artsNK, on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council, are launching another series of exciting commission opportunities for the East Coast of England. Structures on the Edge is an invitation to artists, architects and designers to respond to a series of semi-remote coastal locations and propose creative interventions that capture the imagination as well as add to the visitor experience.

In the same way as Bathing Beauties reinvented traditional beach huts, this scheme is looking for artistic vision to explore and reinterpret the space where the land gives way to the sea, bringing together two fundamental aspects of 21st century culture in the UK – the arts and the coast.

There are three new potential sites on the ten-mile stretch of coast between Chapel St. Leonards and Mablethorpe on the Lincolnshire coast as well as a number of other existing and evolving coastal art and architecture projects.

A structure on the Edge is a new concept and represents a rare and exciting opportunity to integrate art and architecture into the extreme edges of our natural habitat.

They might be platforms, landings, hides, shelters, havens, lookouts or other structures designed by artists and architects for the appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the coastal environment.

They may have a specific purpose such as wave watching; cloud spotting; star gazing or climate observation, they may react to or interact with the natural elements in dynamic and surprising ways or they may simply provide a shelter or contemplative place for quiet appreciation.

Structure on the Edge is a challenge to artists and architects to respond to wild beauty in a harsh environment.
